Anthony Gordon- Newcastle forward sustains injury in Luton draw

Newcastle forward Anthony Gordon could be facing a spell on the sidelines after leaving St James’ Park on crutches following the 4-4 draw with Luton.

The 22-year-old was replaced by Callum Wilson at half-time on Saturday.

“I think he twisted his ankle,” said Newcastle boss Eddie Howe, who did not provide a time frame for how long Gordon could be out for.

“He is in a protective boot and the physios are doing the right thing.”

Newcastle have struggled with injuries to key players this season.

Midfielder Joelinton is set to miss the rest of the season with a thigh injury while goalkeeper Nick Pope is currently out after dislocating his shoulder.

Matt Targett, Elliot Anderson, Joe Willock and Jamaal Lascelles are also all sidelined with issues.

Barnes makes goalscoring return

Newcastle were, however, boosted by the return of winger Harvey Barnes on Saturday.

He had been out for the past four months with a foot injury but came on in the 63rd minute and scored Newcastle’s fourth goal to make it 4-4.

“I have been out for a long time and it has been a tough period for me,” Barnes said.

“I just wanted to come on and make an impact and I did but it wasn’t enough to win the game. But it is great being back out there.

“There will be a little bit of rust for a little bit but that goal will give me the world of confidence going forward and hopefully I can build on that and the team can build on that.

“There are still a lot of positives to take.”
